The Holsteiner Stallion Approval and Elite Riding Horse Auction

Thursday, 11 October 2012

Catalogue number 110. A 4 year old stallion by Cassini I.The first November days are all about the Holsteiner stallion licensing and auction at the Neumünster Holstenhalle. "We can look forward to an age group of particular high quality. This has already become apparent during the pre-selection“, says breed director Dr. Thomas Nissen. “Sires like Cachas, Calido I, Caretino, Casall, Clarimo, Clinton I, Contender, Diarado, Larimar, Quirado or Stakkato boast sons with high-class jumping ability.” For the first time ever, the Holsteiner stallion grading also embraces the dressage aspect. “Dressage riders and dressage horse breeders will be thrilled by the quality of the Ampere, Carabas and Dolany offspring and quickly realize the great potential for a successful future", says breed director Dr. Thomas Nissen.

All in all, 79 colts have been accepted for stallion grading after receiving a clean bill of health in the vet-check. It is also gratifying for the Holsteiner breed that outside blood improvement stallions like Bazar, Q-Verdi - under Maikel van der Vleuten part of London’s silver winning Dutch team - as well as the already mentioned Ampère and Stakkato are represented by offspring at this year’s stallion licensing. This year, the sires with the most stallions candidates are Casall, on everybody’s lips in Germany and abroad, and the long proven Calido I with seven offspring accepted for stallion grading. But also the friends of stallions which have been exerting great influence on the breed in the land between the seas for years are given due attention: Caretino, Cassioni I or Clinton I are again represented by promising sons at Neumünster. The Q blood has been well established in Holstein and not only the founder of this line, Quidam de Revel, is represented by two sons, but also Quintero and Quirado offspring have made it to Neumünster.

Elite Riding Horse Auction

The focus is not only on the two-year-old stallion candidates with their owners hoping for stallion approval, but also on the three- to six-year-old riding horses to be sold in the auction. This year’s auction selection comprises 34 horses, experienced competition horses - some of them with achievements to M level – as well as 3- and 4-year-old “rough diamonds” which have not been shown in competition over the jumps yet. Thoroughbred-influenced auction lots, like for example a 4-year-old Talkative/TB offspring, are likely to make the hearts of eventing enthusiasts beat faster. After all, the Holsteiner breed provided the greatest contingent of eventing horses at the London Olympic Games.

Moreover, two dressage hopefuls by De Chirico and Caretino, respectively, have been accepted and selected for the auction thanks to their thrilling movement. One day, these two talented movers might be in a position to promote the Holsteiner breed in the big arena, same as Le Noir (Uta Gräf), Lento (Hubertus Schmidt) or Collin (Hartwig Burfeind). This year’s auction selection boasts a great genetic diversity. Younger stallions like Cayado, Cristo or Hermes d’Authieux are represented by offspring same as proven sires like Casall, Cassini I and II, Corrado I and Contender. Prospective buyers have ample opportunity to try out and test the horses at the Elmshorn Holsteiner Verband headquarters.

“This decision has been made in the interest of the horses and proved successful last year” says auction manager Christian Poll. “There has been sufficient time for testing the horses over the jump at Elmshorn”.
